Suncoast Communities Blood Bank needs platelet donations

Sarasota, Florida -- Suncoast Communities Blood Bank (SCBB) is asking members of the community to donate platelets.  

Thousands of patients in the community, ranging from newborn babies to seniors, require platelets every year. Platelet donors with type AB blood are especially vital.  Anyone can receive platelets from an AB donor, and newborns in crisis can only receive platelets from type AB donors.

Sarasota, Florida- Sarasota County health officials remind residents to protect themselves and others from the flu this season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fly cases during the winter season peak during January and February.

Help protect yourself from the flu by washing hands often with soap and water, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth, avoid close contact with sick people and getting revaccinated every year because flu viruses change.

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County's Health In Motion Mobile Medical Unit staff is canceling visits to the following Goodwill locations in Sarasota County during October due to unforeseen circumstances.  

Health officials hope to be able to resume services at these locations during November:

North Port

  • Goodwill Manasota Center of North Port, 14809 Tamiami Trail

Venice

  • Goodwill Center- The Rialto, 650 South Tamiami Trail

Sarasota County, Florida -- Looking for a kick-start to reach your fitness goals before the holidays?

Check out the "Basic Training: Beginners Boot Camp" classes starting Tuesday, Oct. 8, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., at the Venice Community Center, 326 S. Nokomis Ave., Venice.  

"These classes are a great way to get ready for the upcoming season of holiday parties, seeing relatives and old friends," said Dorian Mattox, VCC program coordinator. "This is the perfect program to help people achieve their fitness goals."

Sarasota wins Healthy School District Gold Award

Sarasota, Florida- The Sarasota School District is recognized as a healthy school district.

Florida Action for Healthy Kids have presented school officials with the Gold Achievement Level Healthy School District Award. The award is in the form of a flag. Sarasota is 1 of 8 school districts recognized at the Gold Level since the awards program began in 2009.

Community wellness walk to highlight mental health

Community wellness walk to highlight mental health

Sarasota, Florida- Take the first step towards a healthier you by taking part in The Community Wellness Walk Saturday, September 21 at 8 a.m.

The walk is sponsored by members of the Laurel Osprey Venice Nokomis Community Health Action Team. They have planned this walk to raise awareness about mental health and wellness. The free walk is for all ages and is a 1.6 mile walk through Venice. 

Walkers will meet on the grounds of Summit at Venice, 200 Nassau St. N. in Venice. The event is free.  Walkers will travel down Venice Avenue to Esplanade Avenue and back.
