Free Mote visit for Dad on Father's Day

Free Mote visit for Dad on Father's Day

Sarasota, Florida - Give your great dad a chance to see some great dads of nature. You can learn more about seahorse dads on a visit to Mote Aquarium. And on Father's Day, June 19, dads will get in free when they pay for a child.

Seahorses are great dads, because they're the only animals in the world where the males carry the babies. Females deposit the eggs into the male's brood pound and after 28 days, baby seahorses are born.

Mote also has an Adopt a Seahorse program. Adoptions start at $30 and include an adoption certificate, photo and seahorse fact sheet.

Fathers fish for free this weekend

Sarasota, Florida - Here's a gift many dads would love: a day fishing with their kids. And state officials make it easy for families to do that just that this weekend. You won't need a saltwater fishing license anywhere in Florida during the weekend of June 18-19.

"We hope the public will take advantage of the license-free fishing weekend and reconnect with fishing," said FWC executive director Nick Wiley in a statement.

World Oceans Day makes a splash at Mote

World Oceans Day makes a splash at Mote

Sarasota, FL -- Seas of ocean enthusiasts made Sunday's World Oceans Day Family Festival at Mote a big hit.

More than 1,100 guests filled Mote Aquarium to enjoy games, crafts, live music, educational tables and more at the June 5 event celebrating our oceans and their wondrous creatures.

People of all ages came face-to-face with real sharks, fish and other marine life in Mote Aquarium, which was all decked out for this year’s theme: Dr. Seuss’ “One, Two, Three and the Seas.” Kids celebrated by sporting some “cheeky” ocean art — face painting by Nada Meeks.

National Missing Children's Day - How to stay safe

In honor of National Missing Children’s Day today, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is offering information to help parents be vigilant and to encourage them to educate their children about how to stay safe this summer.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children says an estimated 58,000 children are abducted by non-family members each year. Of children who escaped an attempted abduction, 82 percent were successful by kicking, running away or attracting attention.
