North Port, FL -- The community is invited to a free family-centered festival of creativity, action, discovery and more on Nov. 12 at Heron Creek Middle School in North Port.

Attendees will enjoy a wide variety of free and low-cost activity for children and families while having the opportunity to learn more about local business and organizations. Food will be available for purchase and performances are scheduled throughout the day.

Sarasota County -- There are many ways to keep children safe at Halloween, when they may be prone to accidents and injuries. The excitement of children at this time of year sometimes makes them forget to be careful.

Family fun coming to Sarasota Bay

Sarasota, Florida - The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) is hosting a fun, family event at Ken Thompson Park on Saturday, September 24 to mark National Estuaries day.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be a lot of learning activities for children of all ages, including kayak demonstrations, dip netting for aquatic life and a water ski show.

Urfer Family Park nominated for ‘America’s Favorite Park’

Sarasota County Parks and Recreation is encouraging residents and visitors to go online and vote for Urfer Family Park, 4000 Honore Ave., Sarasota, in Coca-Cola’s “America’s Favorite Park” contest.

Votes can be cast for free at http://www.livepositively.com/#/americasparks.

The contest to find America’s Favorite Park is part of Coca-Cola’s Live Positively campaign. This is the second year for the contest, which will award the winning entry a $100,000 grant. The second- and third-place finishers will win grants of $50,000 and $25,000. Voters can cast their ballots as many times as they wish.

Local family donates 82 acres for nature park

Sarasota County, Florida -- Thanks to the Culverhouse family, a new 82-acre nature park is planned near the northern entrance of The Legacy Trail. This park will officially be named “Culverhouse Nature Park” in recognition of the Culverhouse family and their significant donation to the citizens of Sarasota County.

In 2006, Sarasota County accepted the donation of a conservation easement over the site. The Sarasota County Commission approved the park concept plan in 2010. The plan was developed with the input of the Culverhouse family, Palmer Ranch Holdings and neighborhood stakeholders.

The park will be developed in phases with initial improvements to include access into the park from McIntosh Road, signage, fencing, access to the community garden and The Legacy Trail. As additional funding becomes available, the remaining park amenities will be constructed.

Sarasota County, Florida -- Swimming at the beach or pool is a fun and exciting experience. It also can be dangerous for children, and even adults, if they become lost or disoriented because of drifting currents or confusion due to unfamiliarity with surroundings.

Scott Montgomery, general manager of Sarasota County Lifeguard Operations, offers the following tips if a child or adult becomes lost:
