New College of Florida students offer free math tutoring

Sarasota, FL -- Students who need help in math, listen up.


New College of Florida students are offering a free Math Clinic at Sarasota's Selby Public Library now through May 8.


Tutoring is available to all ages every Sunday (except March 20, March 27 and April 24) from 2 - 4 p.m. on the second level of the library at 1331 First Street in Sarasota.


The walk-in Math Clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required.

The Junior Achievement Sarasota’s 9th Annual Invitational will feature an exclusive Professional-Amateur (Pro-Am) Golfing Event on Monday, Feb. 21.

The Pro-Am Event will be an all day extravaganza with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m., including an executive brown bag lunch and beverages. A shotgun start will commence the golfing at noon followed by an evening reception at 5:30 p.m. The post-event celebration will feature a chance to mingle with the Pro’s, dinner, and a silent auction.

So far over 100 golfers are expected to attend. Tropicana has donated "A Night of baseball in the Tropicana Suite" for the Rays vs. Marlins game on Friday, June 17. The package includes 16 tickets and 4 parking passes and is valued at $2000. Bettinardi Golf is donating several high end putters for the event. Professional golfers include PGA Tour players Casey Wittenberg, Marco Dawson and three-time PGA Tour winner Robert Gamez.

Siesta Key, Florida - The Beach Club celebrates the roots of island music with Sunsplash Reggae-Fest '11 on Sunday.

The bands Impulse, Bootleg and Democracy will provide live music. Enjoy Jamaican cuisine served up by Cool Beans.

The event runs from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and admission is $15.

Venice Theatre announces can't-miss concerts

Venice, Florida -- Before February is over, Venice Theatre will present three more concerts on its MainStage. One of the most sought-after harmony acts in the country, The Legends of Doo Wop, will perform on Sunday and Monday, February 20 & 21. Shows are at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $35.

The group features four legendary singers: Tony Passalaqua of the Archies, Tommy Mara from The Crests, Frank Mancuso from The Imaginators, and Steve Horn from The Five Sharks. Dazzling harmonies and plenty of songs from Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Top 100 All-Time Greatest Hits List will keep audiences humming along.

The next weekend brings New Odyssey, an act new to Venice Theatre audiences, along with a returning favorite – Red, Hot & Blue! Back by popular demand after two sell-out shows in December, Red, Hot & Blue is a song and dance troupe out of Branson, MO that takes audiences on a musical journey through the decades from ragtime to rock ‘n’ roll.

Sarasota, FL -- The Sarasota Opera Guild invites the public to its next general meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 9:45 a.m. at the David Cohen Hall at Symphony Center.


The address is 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. 


A coffee and informal social gathering will precede the business meeting.


Afterwards, singers from the Sarasota Opera will perform selections from opera and musical theater.


The meeting is free to the public.

Sarasota, FL -- If you own a condominium, there are probably things you don't know about being a board member or what kind of financial reporting is required for your association. However, an upcoming seminar sponsored by the county and state aims to fill in the information gaps.

The seminar will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15 in the county commission chamber. That's on the first floor of the Sarasota County Administration Center at 1660 Ringling Blvd.

The seminar is free and reservations are not required.

Think you have better name for Venice Myakka River Park?

Venice, FL -- Venice Parks and Recreation Advisory board will hold a workshop to take public input for suggestions regarding the renaming of Venice Myakka River Park.

The workshop takes place Monday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. at Venice City Hall, 401 W. Venice Ave.

Venice Myakka River Park is a 10-acre natural park with a kayak/canoe launch, restrooms and trails opened in 2010.

The name causes it to be mistaken with nearby Myakka State Park. All suggestions are welcome.
