Sarasota County, FL -- The following items will be discussed at the Sarasota Couty Commission meeting tomorrow, March 15 at the Commission Chamber at the Robert L. Anderson Adminstration Center, 4000 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice.

Regulatory Study Presentation (Item 38)

Sarasota County commissioners will discuss a regulatory study of the county prepared by the Leadership Research Institute through the Economic Development Corporation (EDC).

The county commissioners requested the study last year to assist in identifying policies, regulations and practices that could be hindering business development.

Shakespeare comes to the Venice Theatre stage

Venice, Florida -- Venice Theatre’s next Stage II production is William Shakespeare’s tragic romance, Romeo and Juliet.

The familiar tale of two star-crossed lovers opens in the Pinkerton Theatre (Venice’s 90-seat black box space) on Thursday, March 24 and runs through Sunday, April 10.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Sarasota, FL -- Lakewood Ranch is proud to host the 12th Annual Juried Art Show and Sale held at Main Street Lakewood Ranch.


The 2-day show will present over 65 talented artists from around the country displaying a variety of media including sculpture, glass, tile, woodworking, photography, mixed media, pottery, jewelry, pastel, oil and watercolor painting.


The event is March 19 - 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking and admission is free.

Sarasota native debuts 'The Break Up' at 2011 film fest

Sarasota, Florida -- Filmmaker and entrepreneur Shaun Greenspan grew up in Sarasota. His father, Dr. Richard Greenspan, is a prominent dentist here, and his mother, Betty Greenspan, is a nurse and artist. Greenspan says he developed his wry sense of humor and gift for storytelling from their example and influence.

He brought that legacy with him to Los Angeles, where he has since launched his filmmaking career. Greenspan will bring it all back home next month when his short film, “The Break Up,” premieres at the 2011 Sarasota Film Festival, Friday, April 15, noon, and Sunday, April 17, at 7 p.m., at Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 in downtown Sarasota, 1993 Main Street.

Asolo Rep announces 2011-2012 season

Sarasota, Florida -- Michael Donald Edwards, Asolo Rep producing artistic director, and Greg Leaming, Asolo Rep associate artistic director and director of The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, announced their selections for the 2011-2012 season yesterday.

Opening the Asolo Rep's 53nd season is Tony Award-winning My Fair Lady, a musical that has been called "the perfect musical."

The Rep season launches in January 2012 with Once in a Lifetime by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, and Yentl adapted by Leah Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer.

2011 Susan G. Komen Lunch for the Cure

Sarasota, FL -- The Florida Suncoast Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will present the 7th Lunch for the Cure event on Friday, March 4 at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota.

More than 600 supporters are expected to join the luncheon, featuring Keynote Speaker Eric Brinker, nephew of Susan G. Komen, and son of Nancy G. Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The luncheon also will honor Sarasota resident Frances Lambert for her outstanding leadership and long-term commitment to the Florida Suncoast Affiliate.

Lambert has been involved with the Florida Suncoast Affiliate for 10 years, served as president of the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2007, and established the group of Komen volunteers in Sarasota and Manatee counties in 2001.

Senior drama troupe announces 19th year of "Follies" show

Venice, Florida -- The Venice Theatre has recently announced the return of The Annual Silver Foxes Follies, a hilarious variety show that plays to crowded houses each year, which will be presented March 16 through March 20, 2011. Evening performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday’s performance is at 2 p.m. Reserved seats for the Follies are $24 and can be purchased online at www.venicestage.com or by calling the box office at 941-488-1115.

The Silver Foxes is the senior outreach troupe of Venice Theatre. The popular group performs road shows around the area bringing skits, songs and dance numbers to community centers, religious groups and clubs throughout Sarasota County. Once a year they produce a full-length variety show for the MainStage – The Follies - which helps raise money for the theatre and its outreach programs.

Joe Simmons, veteran actor and director, is the Artistic Director of the Silver Foxes. “The Follies’ combination of singing, dancing and fast-paced comedy never gets old,” Simmons says. Jason Brenner, a frequent musical director and performer at Venice Theatre, is musical director of the Foxes.
