Austin Vickrey Quartet to perform at "Jazz at Two" concert

Sarasota, FL -- The Jazz Club of Sarasota presents The Austin Vickrey Quartet as part of its “Jazz at 2” concert series on Friday, May 13.

The Austin Vickrey Quartet includes Austin Vickrey on saxophone; Kym Purling on piano; Mark Neuenschwander on bass; and Mark Feinman on drums. The group will play originals compositions by Vickrey, as well as selections from Cole Porter, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and others.

Austin Vickrey, saxophonist, composer, and arranger, is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand musicians in the Tampa Bay area.

Sarasota, Florida -- Asolo Repertory Theatre is seeking actors, both Equity and non-Equity, for its 2011-2012 season production of MY FAIR LADY.

Actors selected for this production will have the rare experience of working under the direction of Tony Award-winning and Oscar Award-nominated theatre icon Frank Galati.

With music by Frederick Loewe, book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, MY FAIR LADY is a classic story of determination and achievement that features some of the most memorable songs and characters in musical theatre history.

Venice Theatre summer camp goes to Hollywood!

Venice, Florida -- Registration is now open for Venice Theatre’s annual summer theatre camps and adult classes. 

Campers will rotate daily between acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre activities.

Instructors include area theatre professionals Cathy Baudrit, Kelly Duyn, Alyssa Marie Hunek, Cathleen McClendon, Ronald Myroup, Sandy Davisson and Gladys Varga. The theme for the summer is “Hooray for Hollywood.”  

VT’s own playwright in residence, Ronald Myroup, will create an original script that will be performed on the theatre’s MainStage July 15 & 16, 2011. Tuition scholarships are available for qualified families.

Crave a Corvette? Drive to St. Armands!

Sarasota, Florida - Have you always craved a Corvette? If so, drive to St. Armands on Saturday and prepare yourself for envy.

Over 200 pristine and original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. The show runs from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Judging will be take place throughout the day with an awards ceremony at 3:00 p.m.

This is the 13th year for Classic Corvette's on the Circle and it's one of the largest Corvette car shows in the state.

Grand opening celebration will feature a 5K Fun Run

Sarasota, FL --  County officials and community representatives and organizations, including the Sarasota Audubon Society, will celebrate the completion of the Celery Fields Regional Stormwater Facility and the replacement of the Raymond Road Bridge as well as other improvements during a grand opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.

The ceremony at the gazebo just north of Palmer Boulevard will be followed by a 5k Fun Run starting at 6 p.m.

For the Fun Run, the first 200 runners/walkers who register will receive a commemorative T-shirt and medal for finishing the 5k run.

Registration is only on-site on the day of the event from 4 - 5:45 p.m. In lieu of a registration fee, the Sarasota Audubon Society will collect donations for its future interpretive learning center at the Celery Fields.

Workshop to prepare residents for natural disasters

Sarasota, FL -- The April storm that produced tornadoes which damaged mobile homes on Longboat Key is a reminder that disasters can occur anytime.

Residents are invited to the 2nd Annual Community Disaster Preparedness Workshop from 5:30 - 9 p.m. on Friday, May 13, and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.

Seasoned disaster response experts will help equip residents with the skills and resources they need to be ready.

The 1-and-a-half day workshop will address a variety of topics, including neighborhood readiness, actions to take before first responders arrive, how to get critical supplies such as food and water to people in need quickly, community resources and Sarasota County Emergency Management.

Last chance for volunteer award nominations!

Sarasota County, FL -- Keep Sarasota County Beautiful (KSCB) is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Volunteer Awards Recognition Program.

KSCB also is accepting applications from organizations or individuals who want to reserve a display table at the annual volunteer awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 25.

The event will be held 4-7 p.m. at the Venice Community Center, 326 Nokomis Ave, Venice.
