Honore Avenue extension project completed

Sarasota County, Florida -- Officials of Sarasota County and developer Palmer Ranch Holdings LTD will celebrate the completion of an approximately 2.6-mile extension of Honore Avenue through Palmer Ranch at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled at 2 p.m. tomorrow, March 16.

The public is invited to the event, which will be held on Honore Avenue about one mile south of Fire Rescue Station 15.

The public-private partnership on a major north-south arterial section known as Honore Phase V was made possible through a developer agreement with the county. The extended roadway is from about three-quarters of a mile south of Central Sarasota Parkway to State Road 681. It includes two 12-foot travel lanes, a median with trees that includes area for two future lanes, 4-foot bicycle lanes, 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides in the southern portion of the road, a closed drainage system with curbs and stormwater ponds and a 24-inch water main. Wildflowers and native plants were planted in the area by the entrance to Oscar Scherer State Park.

Design and construction was overseen by the developer according to county regulations. Construction began in January 2010. Designed by WilsonMiller Inc. and constructed by E.T. MacKenzie of Florida Inc., the total project cost, including design, permitting and construction of the roadway and utilities, was about $6.9 million. It was funded by the development firm of Palmer Ranch Holdings LTD, which will be reimbursed by county road impact fees through the Central County Palmer Ranch Road District.

Palmer Ranch also is constructing Phase VI of the Honore corridor, which extends just over a mile south of Honore Phase V. That section of roadway is nearly completed. It was funded by a Surtax III revenue bond to be repaid by infrastructure surtax continuation funds.

Honore Phase VII, which will be the last section of the corridor to be constructed, will extend to Laurel Road and include a bridge over Fox Creek and a signalized intersection at Honore and State Road 681.

Other phases of Honore Avenue from Bee Ridge Road to Fruitville Road are being constructed by Sarasota County.

When all seven phases of Honore Avenue are done, this major corridor will provide an alternative to Interstate 75 and U.S. 41 as a north-south route connecting Sarasota to Venice.
