County hosts groundbreaking ceremony for new Gulf Gate Library

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County officials will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gulf Gate Library at its original and future home, 7112 Curtiss Ave., on Friday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m.

Construction for the $7.6-million library began in mid-June. The two-story, 25,800-square-foot facility is projected to be completed in the fall of 2014. The design of the new library, created by Harvard Jolly Architects, includes ideas from community members who provided feedback during a series of public open-house meetings last year.

The new library will be an energy-efficient, modern facility featuring a technology lab, meeting and study rooms, a Friends of Gulf Gate Library Bookstore, outdoor gardens with comfortable reading areas, a children's program space, and a high-tech teen center.

The Gulf Gate Library has been a vital hub in the community since 1973. More than 200 active volunteers assist in the day-to-day operation of the library, and members of the Friends of the Library organization provide generous support for programs and service enhancements.

The Gulf Gate Library is currently located in the Westfield Sarasota Square mall, 8201 South Tamiami Trail. The mall location is open Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.; and Thursday-Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
