UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County will host a Butterfly Workshop from 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Twin Lakes Park.

Time to snap your photos for photo contest

Sarasota, Florida -- If you want to enter the "I Love Sarasota Bay" photo contest, better enter your snaps in a snap. The deadline to submit entries is Friday, Oct. 31.

The contest is part of the inaugural Sarasota Bay Water Festival scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at Ken Thompson Park. The winning submissions will be showcased at the festival and photographers will receive gift certificates to Whole Foods Market.

Venice community cleanup will be held Oct. 27

Venice community cleanup will be held Oct. 27

Venice, Florida -- It's time to clean out the garage and gather up discarded household items, junk and yard waste. Sarasota County will hold its annual free community cleanup in the Venice area from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Dumpsters will be provided by Waste Management and will be available at three locations for refuse from residents.

Precautionary boil water notice lifted for Siesta Key

Siesta Key, Florida -- On Sunday, Oct. 21, county officials lifter the precautionary boil water notice for those impacted by a broken water main on Siesta Key in the 6600 block of Stickney Point Road. 

The water main break on Oct. 18 caused a service interruption for approximately 2,600 Sarasota County Utilities customers. The county says bacteriological testing shows the water is safe to drink.

Chamber gets new solar panels

Sarasota, Florida -- On Thursday morning, Oct. 19, the Greater Sarasota County Chamber of Commerce unveiled their new solar panels.

The chamber is the one of the first in the southwest region to take advantage of producing its own power utilizing solar thanks to Blue Sky Solar Group. 

The company recently installed a 10,000-watt solar roof and awning mounted installation that will supply the building with over 10 percent of its power needs and greatly lower its carbon footprint.

"No swim" advisory issued for Bird Key Park

Sarasota County, Florida -- A "no swim" advisory has been issued for Bird Key Park, a recently renovated recreational area directly west of the Ringling Causeway bridge on the north side of Bird Key.

Sarasota County Health Department officials received testing results from beach water samples taken on Wednesday, Oct. 10, that show an elevated level of enterococci (enteric) bacteria.

Documentary includes Mote's Beach Conditions Report

Sarasota, Florida - An award-winning documentary filmmaker is focusing her camera on Mote Marine Laboratory this week.

Dena Seidel, from Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts, is working on a project about how oceans affect people's daily lives. Part of her documentary will include Mote's Beach Conditions Report and she is interviewing Julie Odenweller, an asthma sufferer, who uses the report to help her avoid beach areas with red tide.
