Forest Service conducts 100-acre burn at Myakka State Forest

North Port, Florida -- The Florida Forest Service will be conducting a 100-acre prescribed burn today, Dec. 19, in the Myakka State Forest.

The burn will be in the northwest corner of the forest near River Road and East River Road, just south of yesterday's burn area.

The City says a smoke column will likely be visible to travelers along River Road and Tamiami Trail and to people in the city limits.

Sarasota County Fire officials are encouraging residents and visitors to stay alert to wildfire threats. They say last month ranked among the top five driest Novembers on record across the region, significantly increasing the risk to wildfires.

Each year, thousands of acres of land and many homes are destroyed by fires. Droughts, lightning, burning debris or carelessness contribute to the ignition of wildfires. It is everyone's responsibility to keep a watchful eye on the threat of wildfires.

County lifts precautionary boil water advisory on Siesta Key

Siesta Key, Florida -- Sarasota County has lifted a precautionary boil water advisory for those impacted by a broken water main on Siesta Key at Beach Road from Ocean Boulevard to Calle Del Invierno.

The water main break caused a service interruption for approximately 125 Sarasota County Utilities customers.

The break occurred Nov. 19 and was repaired the same day. A precautionary boil water advisory was issued for anyone whose water service was disrupted. Bacteriological testing shows water is safe to drink.

Sarasota schools receive rain barrels to recycle storm water

Sarasota, Florida -- Students at 31 Sarasota schools will learn how to recycle storm water using rain barrels.

The schools with garden programs have received rain barrels from UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. The beverage distribution company, Redi-2-DrinQ donated 50 barrels to UF/IFAS.

Elementary schools that received barrels are Alta Vista, Brentwood Elementary, Emma E. Booker Elementary, Gocio, Southeast, Garden Glenallen and Taylor Ranch. Middle schools are McIntosh and Oak Part South. High schools are Riverview, Suncoast Polytechnical, Pine View and Venice.

Controlled burn in Myakka State Forest

North Port, Florida -- The Florida Forest Service is conducting a controlled burn in the Myakka State Forest Thursday.

The 200-acre burn will be located in Section 14, Township 40, Range 28 in the Forest. A smoke column will be visible to the City of North Port and to travelers along U.S. 41 and River Road.

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port is seeking nominations for a Small Business Florida Friendly Landscaping Award.

The award program, organized by the North Port Beautification and Tree/Scenic Highway Committee, will honor a single business that uses Florida-Friendly Landscaping principals outside their storefront or building.
