Red tide continues to plague county beaches

Sarasota, Florida -- It appears Sarasota County residents won't be able to enjoy the waters of area beaches this weekend.

The FWC reported Wednesday medium concentrations of the red tide bloom that has been plaguing the area continues to have a presence. In addition, fish deaths and respiratory irritation continue to be reported in the county south through Lee County.

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port and the Sarasota County Extension Service Master Gardener Program have partnered to offer gardening classes to the citizens of the City of North Port.

"The Brown Bag Garden Series" is a series of specialized garden topic classes held every 4th Thursday. The classes will be presented by an Urban Horticulture Extension Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator or Master Gardeners.

Vendors sought for 2nd Nature Environmental Festival

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port is seeking vendors and sponsors for the upcoming 2nd Nature Environmental Festival. The City is also seeking nominations for the Greenest Citizen Award; the winner will be recognized at the festival.

This free festival for the whole family will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park located on 6968 Reistertown Road in the North Port Estates.

Workers to remove dead fish from Blind Pass Beach

Manasota Key, Florida -- Crews from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Work Offender Program will be removing dead fish on Blind Pass Beach on Thursday and Friday.

County Officials suspect the fish died from a red tide bloom off shore. They will continue to monitor all public beaches for impacts of red tide.

So far, the fish are only washing up on Blind Pass Beach at 6725 Manasota Key Road.

High fire danger in Sarasota County

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port reports a "Red Flag Warning" has been issued for Southwest Florida. This means that this area is experiencing severe drought conditions, low humidity and moderate to gusty winds.

On the Keetch-Byrum Index, a scale of wildfire danger from zero (no danger) to 800 (extreme danger), Sarasota County and the City of North Port are in the 550 - 599 range.
