Sarasota County to Celebrate Arbor Day

Sarasota, Florida -- Learn how to plant and care for trees during Sarasota County and UF/IFAS Extension Arbor Day 2013 celebration. 

Two educational events will be held.  "Pruning for Tree Health" will be held for homeowners from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, and a "Tree School," focusing on best practices and proper tree care for commercial audiences, will be held from 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday, April 30.

Both classes will be at UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County at Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota.

Sarasota, Florida-Here's your chance to give back to your community and create a cleaner, safer more beautiful environment to live in. The Great American Cleanup is a month away and Keep Sarasota County Beautiful is looking for volunteers to help out.

The Great American Cleanup is Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. until noon. Across the nation, millions of volunteers in more than 15-thousand communities participate cleaning up local parks, waterways, trails, sidewalks and streets.

North Port, Florida -- It's time for the 2013 Great American Cleanup. The Great American Cleanup is a fun educational way to protect North Port's natural beauty. Join us as we clean our roadways, waterways and parks to ensure that the residents of today and tomorrow will enjoy clean, healthy places.

The cleanup will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at sites throughout the City. Check-in will take place outside City Hall, 4970 City Hall Boulevard. Assignments will be handed out from there.

Sarasota, Florida -- The herons, pelicans and ducks in Sarasota harbor have to make a little room for the new bird-of-the-walk in town: The solar-powered Loon.

The Loon was produced by the Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company based in Rome, NY.

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port and the Sarasota County Extension Service Master Gardener Program have partnered to offer gardening classes to the citizens of the City of North Port.

"The Brown Bag Garden Series" is a series of specialized garden topic classes held every 4th Thursday. 

These classes will be presented by an Urban horticulture Extension Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator or Master Gardeners. 

The next Class will be held on April 25 and will focus on "Annuals or Perennials."

Newgate School celebrates visiting students

Sarasota, Florida -- Newgate School is celebrating Earth Day with students from Mexico as part of their annual student exchange program. 

Students from Colegio Montessori Chiaravalle, a school in León, arrived safely this past Monday.

“This exchange program, a two week - immersion for the Upper Elementary (4th – 6th grade)NewGate students, has been an enormous success. Friendships were cultivated last year and we can see significant advances in interest in the Spanish language and culture,” stated Robin Howe, a NewGate Upper Elementary Teacher.

Sarasota, Florida -- Do you love Sarasota Bay? Well, now's the time to prove it with your camera. The Sarasota Bay Water Festival is once again encouraging local photographers of all ages to enter the I Love Sarasota Bay contest.

The winning entries will be displayed at the regional water festival set for November 2nd at Ken Thompson Park in Sarasota.
