Prescribed burn on the Carlton Ranch today

Venice, FL - There is a 150 acre prescribed burn today on the Carlton Ranch. The burn is taking place approximately 4½ miles north of North Port, near State Road 72.

Prevailing winds this afternoon are driving the smoke toward the city limits, and staying lower to the ground than expected.

Fire Officials have spoken with the burn supervisor, who reports the fire is well attended and under control.

Venice, FL - Sharky's on the Pier has attracted some unwanted attention from protesters this week, who are outraged that the popular restaurant and bar decided to poison local pigeons using a toxic deterrent to keep the birds away from their business. Since the owners consider the pigeons a health risk to customers, and have received many complaints, they decided to use pest control to solve the problem.
