Sarasota County: Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service in Ruskin has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northwestern Hardee, southwestern Hillsborough, southeastern Polk, Manatee and western Sarasota Counties until 5:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds in excell of 60 mph.  These storms have a history of also producing small hail.  The storms are moving East at 25 mph.

County lifts boil water advisory for Bee Ridge Square

Sarasota County has lifted a precautionary boil water advisory for those impacted by a broken water main at Bee Ridge Square shopping center, 4001 Cattlemen Road. Services were interrupted to 10 businesses, including three restaurants, a beauty salon, a nail salon and a veterinarian clinic.

The spontaneous break occurred about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, resulting in limited service to businesses at Bee Ridge Square shopping center. The water was turned back on by noon Wednesday, but then water was turned off again around 8 a.m. Thursday, May 12, for final repairs. It was turned back on around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. A precautionary boil water advisory was issued for anyone whose water service was disrupted. The advisory has been lifted, effective about 8 a.m. today, May 14. Bacteriological testing shows water is safe to drink.

Sarasota County Utilities has issued a precautionary boil water advisory after a water main break at the Bee Ridge Square shopping center, 4001 Cattlemen Road. Services were interrupted to 10 businesses, including three restaurants, a beauty salon, a nail salon and a veterinarian clinic. The water main was shut down about 11:15 this morning, and the water was turned back on before noon.

Sarasota County has contacted all the businesses affected.

While the county has no reason to believe the drinking water was contaminated, Florida law requires that drinking water providers issue precautionary boil water advisories to customers affected by pressure losses in water mains.

Palmetto contractor to restore Palmer Point Park

Palmetto contractor to restore Palmer Point Park

The Sarasota County Commission Tuesday awarded a contract to restore the southeastern portion of Palmer Point Park on the shore of Little Sarasota Bay. The approximately 2-acre spoil island site is south of Midnight Pass. 

Tampa Contracting Services Inc. of Palmetto, was awarded the $559,650 project.

Once used as a spoil disposal site by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, the site was invaded by exotic Australian pine and Brazilian pepper trees.

Air quality health notice issued

Sarasota County has issued an air advisory for current elevated ozone levels and/or the potential for elevated ozone levels that fall within the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category, per Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) national ambient air quality standards for public health. The elevated levels were detected today, May 10, at Lido Key.  Similar ozone levels have been measured across the state over the past three days.

People with respiratory ailments may experience health effects during this air advisory and should limit their outdoor activities. The general public is not likely to be affected. Any person with health-related questions should contact their personal health care provider.

This air advisory is in effect until dusk today.

Retro red tide film wins "Best in Show" at Mote

Sarasota, FL -- Learning about Florida red tide just got a little cooler, thanks to a video straight out of 1950s health class.

The retro-style film “Red Tide and You” recently won Best in Show at the Art of Red Tide Science exhibit at Mote Marine Laboratory.

The exhibit, which wrapped up on April 26, featured 14 art and outreach projects created by students from Ringling College of Art and Design as part of the Ecology of Water course taught by Mote scientists. 

The students created videos, clothing, a puppet show, a video game and other outreach projects to communicate red tide research information to the general public.

Grand opening celebration will feature a 5K Fun Run

Grand opening celebration will feature a 5K Fun Run

Sarasota, FL --  County officials and community representatives and organizations, including the Sarasota Audubon Society, will celebrate the completion of the Celery Fields Regional Stormwater Facility and the replacement of the Raymond Road Bridge as well as other improvements during a grand opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.

The ceremony at the gazebo just north of Palmer Boulevard will be followed by a 5k Fun Run starting at 6 p.m.

For the Fun Run, the first 200 runners/walkers who register will receive a commemorative T-shirt and medal for finishing the 5k run.

Registration is only on-site on the day of the event from 4 - 5:45 p.m. In lieu of a registration fee, the Sarasota Audubon Society will collect donations for its future interpretive learning center at the Celery Fields.
