Kids reel in fish and environmental knowledge

Sarasota, Florida - Some 95 third graders cast about for fish and reeled in some environmental knowledge on Thursday. The students from B.D. Gullett Elementary in Manatee County visited Mote Aquaculture Park for a fishing clinic and ecology day.

Besides casting besides experience anglers, the students also got to hob-knob with Mote scientists and tour the facility which produces farm-raised caviar. A Mote news release describes the fun day.

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Hazardous Waste has been recognized for its highly successful hazardous waste collection program. The 2013 North America Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA) Longstanding Program Excellence Award recognizes programs with more than 20 years of service that are consistently above and beyond." The award was presented at the 2013 NAHMMA Florida Chapter Workshop in Daytona Beach earlier this year.

Sarasota, Florida -- The City of Sarasota will partner with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and community residents to host an Air Potato Round-up Saturday, October 19 at North Water Tower Park. 

Volunteers interested in cleaning up the community park, home to one of the most popular disc golf courses in Florida, are encouraged to come out for a fun morning of camaraderie as we remove air potato plants, an invasive vine.

Sarasota County, Florida -- The public is invited to a fall festival celebrating the grand opening of Sarasota County's newest community garden at Bee Ridge Park.

 The free, family friendly event will feature activities including carnival games, face painting, a karate demonstration and a composting workshop taught by experts from Sarasota County Extension.

Recently 15 additional companies demonstrated their commitment to the environment by joining the Sarasota County's Green Business Partnership program.

County strengthens area schools STEMs with seeds, plants

Sarasota County, Florida -- Area school teachers are receiving sprouts for the future this week thanks to a program organized by the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences Extension Sarasota County in partnership with the Florida Farm to School program.  

There are more than 40 school gardens in the county, and 20 of those are participating in the collaborative effort. The seeds were donated by Sakata, Bejo and Champion Seeds, while the starter plants were grown by UF staff in conjunction with Ready Plants during the summer.
