Sarasota Police Department receives top awards

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota Police Department receives top three awards in its size category for the Florida Law Enforcement Challenge 2012.  

The Sarasota Police Department took 2nd and 3rd place honors in the 'Click It or Ticket' category out of 39 other law enforcement agencies with 151 to 250 officers.

Aviation Unit Wins National FLIR Video Award

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was awarded 3rd place in the FLIR Vision Awards presented at the 2013 Airborne Law Enforcement Association annual conference in Orlando.

The FLIR Vision Awards are presented annually to airborne law enforcement teams with the best video of a rescue, apprehension or surveillance mission.

Box full of ammunition left in Walmart parking lot

Osprey, Florida -- Sarasota Sheriff's deputies are trying to figure out who left behind a box full of ammunition in the parking lot of an Osprey Walmart Sunday night.

Deputies say Walmart employees found the unattended green military-style ammunition box around 6:30 p.m. and called police.

After investigating, deputies from the Hazardous Devices Unit deemed the box safe to handle and removed it from the store parking lot in the 13100 block of S. Tamiami Trail.

$3,000 reward for info on restaurant manager fatal beating

Sarasota, Florida -- Crime Stoppers of Sarasota is now offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person, or persons, responsible for the death of Dynasty Restaurant manger Andrew Tian.

Tian passed away Friday as a result of severe head injuries sustained following an incident at the restaurant.

Sarasota County Crime Down in First Half of 2013

Sarasota, Florida --Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight is pleased to report that crime is down 10 percent in the first half of 2013 and he credits proactive policing, actionable intelligence on prolific offenders and crime prevention partnerships with the community for the reduction.

Major crimes, known as Part 1 Offenses in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Index, decreased 13 percent from January to June, and violent crime is down 10 percent, due in part to declines in the following categories:

Man wanted on sexual battery charges arrested

Sarasota, Florida -- With the assistance of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, a man accused of capital sexual battery of a young girl, has been arrested.

Kyle Riley was arrested by deputies just after midnight on July 18.

Crime Stoppers looking for suspect, $1,000 reward

Sarasota, Florida -- Crime Stoppers of Sarasota is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the brutal beating at the New Dynasty Chinese Buffet.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the circumstances leading up to the discovery of a restaurant manager with severe head trauma last night.

Deputies were called to New Dynasty Chinese Buffet, 6131 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, around 9:38 p.m., after customers found 51-year-old Tain "Andrew"

Tian lying unconscious in the driveway of a nearby business.
