Woman shot multiple times, shooter still on loose

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota Police are investigating the shooting of a 22-year-old woman at an apartment complex late Sunday night.

When police arrived at the apartment in the 1900 block of Orange Avenue around 11:10 p.m., they found 22-year-old Tenisha Taylor lying on the floor suffering from several gunshot wounds. Police say she was conscious and able to tell them what happened.

Court: Venice man can't be held as sex offender

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) - The Florida Supreme Court has ruled that the state can't hold a Venice man in sex offender detention because he had already finished his prison sentence by the time paperwork was filed.

The court ruled 5-2 in Larry Phillips' case on Thursday.

It said an individual must be in "lawful custody" when commitment proceedings are started. Phillips was in physical custody but his sentence had expired three months earlier.

Shots fired at Sarasota home, no arrest made

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota Police Department is investigating an incident where shots were fired at a home in the area of 24th Street and Osprey Avenue.

Investigators say around 12:33 a.m. Thursday morning, officers in the area heard gunfire -- about 4 or 5 shots -- and, as they checked the area out, were flagged down by a woman. She told them a white vehicle had just sped off from the area.

Sarasota, Florida -- A homeless man has been arrested for getting into an argument with a security guard.

On April 3, officers were sent to a SCAT Bus Depot on 1st Street to break up a fight. Leopold Lake tried to get a bus pass from the security guard and when the guard told Lake he did not have a pass Lake became irritated.

Lake became loud, yelling at the guard and then shoved the guard. 

As officers began to arrest Lake he resisted and swung at the officers with his fist. 

Arrest made in Sarasota homicide

Sarasota, Florida -- A man has been arrested for the murder of a man whose body was discovered behind an apartment complex on March 14.

On April 3, Sarasota Sheriff's detectives arrested Kevin Peterson for the murder of Jovonne Corn. Corn's body was discovered in an open field on 19th Street and Gillespie Avenue. 

Man gets 2 life sentences for Sarasota crime spree

Sarasota, Florida -- The man responsible for a violent crime spree in Sarasota has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years for his crimes.

Thirty-year-old Pele Williams -- a man with a violent history -- was convicted on Wednesday, April 3 of robbery with a firearm, principal to robbery with a firearm, principal to aggravated battery, and fleeing to elude and immediately sentenced by the judge.

Shooting in Sarasota, no injuries

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota Police Department is currently investigating a shooting at 24th Street and Osprey Avenue. 

The shooting took place on 10:22 a.m. on April 3. No one was injured and detectives are interviewing the victims and following up on evidence and leads.
