Business owner charged with grand theft

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested a business owner for allegedly taking money for work he never did.

Sarasota deputies say 39-year-old Matthew Nemeth, of Bradenton, took thousands of dollars from a customer without ever doing the work he was hired to do.

The victim contacted Atmospheres Kitchen and Bath Artistry on North Washington Boulevard in Sarasota in December 2012 to renovate her kitchen countertops. After receiving a written estimate, the woman signed a contract with the company and gave Nemeth a check for partial payment in the amount of $6,000.

Work never began and, after numerous failed attempts to contact Nemeth or to obtain a refund of her $6,000, the victim contacted police.

Detectives arrested Nemeth Thursday and charged him with Grand Theft. He was released after posting $20,000 bond.
