Embracing Our Differences receives Tourist Development Arts grant

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Commission recently awarded Embracing Our Differences a $32,970 Tourist Development Cultural/Arts grant to help fund its 2014 exhibition season, which runs March 30-June 1, 2014, in Sarasota’s Island Park, and May 2-June 1, 2014, at North Port High School. Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences’ annual juried art exhibit has graced downtown Sarasota's bayfront with billboard-sized images created by artists, writers and students from around the world reflecting their interpretation of the message, “enriching lives through diversity.”

Sarasota, Florida -- On July 15th at the regular Sarasota City Commission meeting, the Commission continued its collaboration with the Downtown Improvement District towards some long awaited Downtown improvements.

The Downtown Improvement District submitted a proposal to add additional enhancements to the Main Street Streetscape project. These include the construction of four brick-paver crosswalks at the intersection of Main Street and Palm Avenue to replace what is now striping only. The construction will require the closure of this intersection for up to three weeks.

City of Venice and Sarasota County to host Legacy Park workshop

Sarasota, Florida -- Participants will learn about the proposed improvements and how they may coincide with the surrounding areas, including the Historic Venice Train Depot, Marina Boat Ramp, Venice Historical Society, The Legacy Trail, Venetian Waterway Trail, Hatchett Creek and other neighboring properties.

During the workshop, staff also will seek suggestions for future uses of the historic Manhattan Produce Building adjacent to the site. City and county staff members working on the project will be available to answer questions and receive comments.

The American Red Cross recently launched their "Team Red Cross App" that will allow people to sign up to help, get an overview on basic tasks and receive notifications and Red Cross disaster volunteer opportunities in their community.

Sarasota, Florida -- The ‘Stop the Violence’ Celebrity Basketball Fundraiser will be played Friday, July 19 with Sarasota native and Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields and Bradenton native and Denver Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

“We do our best to convey to our youth that violence is not the path for them to reach their full potential,” said Jerry Fogle, RLTCC Manager.  “We’re very excited to partner with Sam, Dominique and Booker High School for this fundraiser that also will help raise community awareness about the need to stop the violence.”
