Keep Sarasota County Beautiful accepting volunteer award nominations

Sarasota County, Florida -- Keep Sarasota County Beautiful is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Volunteer Awards, which will be announced at its annual recognition dinner in November.

This program recognizes individuals and groups who have made a visible difference and significant contribution toward anti-littering and beautification activities throughout Sarasota County.

Nominations for volunteer awards are due Friday, Oct. 4, by 5 p.m.

Sarasota Residents Invited to Give Input On Preserving Florida's History

Sarasota, Florida -- Here's your chance to give your input on how to preserve Florida's history and historical, archeological and cultural resources.

State and county staff will host a public input session 3-5 p.m., Thursday, August 15 at Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota.

The Mission of the Florida Division of Historical Resources is to inspire a love of history through preservation and education.

Do you have spectacular pictures of your county's natural landscapes that you feel are calendar worthy? If so, you may want to submit them to the Florida Association of Counties for their 2014 calendar! 

According to the FAC, all interested parties are encouraged to send in scenic shots of their county's "Beautiful Roads & Trails" for consideration:

Sarasota, Florida -- Time to get your feet wet and help the county's bays. Sarasota County needs volunteers to survey seagrass growth in area waterways.

Seagrass beds are important to the health of the ecosystem. The beds help stabilize shorelines and provide food and cover for a variety of wildlife.

A training session for volunteers is scheduled for Saturday, August 10th at the Turtle Beach Community Center, 8918 Midnight Pass Road, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. p.m. A portion of the training takes place in the water, so participants should dress accordingly.

Goodwill kicks off summer food drive with Sarasota and Manatee food banks

Sarasota, Florida -- Goodwill Manasota will kick off its summer food drive next month to benefit the Food Bank of Manatee and All Faiths Food Bank. From August 4-10, the public is encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to any Goodwill location in Sarasota, Manatee, Hardee and DeSoto counties.

Master Gardeners partner to give back to special needs students

Sarasota, Florida --The Sarasota County Master Gardeners, a volunteer group working through Sarasota County Extension, has completed a beautification project at the Oak Park School, 7285 Proctor Road, Sarasota. Oak Park School serves more than 300 special needs students.

The newly planted landscape at the entrance and bus drop-offs now includes four large urns filled with snowbush and impatiens, a 48-foot long picket fence backed by podocarpus bushes and fronted with knockout rose bushes. Another entrance has been lined with areca palms.

County asks for time capsule submissions to be opened in 2071

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota Library officials are asking for your help in putting together a time capsule to be open in 2071.

Sarasota residents are asked to submit a one-page essay, drawing, or black and white photo describing what life is like in 2013 in Sarasota County and/or what they think life will be like in 2071.

Each submission should include the submitter's name, age, address and phone number. A panel of judges will decide whose entry will make it inside the time capsule.
