Upcoming workshop offers insight for starting cottage food business

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Extension is offering a two-day workshop for community members who are interested in the cottage food business.

The workshop costs $15 and will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, 6 - 8 p.m., at Sarasota County Extension, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota.

"Individuals often make food products that friends and family rave about and encourage them to market," said Linda Wilson, manager of the Venice Farmer's Market. "Starting your own cottage food business and becoming a vendor at a local farmer's market offers would-be entrepreneurs a way to make a living at what they are passionate about."

Topics for the workshop include:

  • What products can be made and where they can be sold
  • Labeling requirements
  • Food safety factors
  • Marketing, budgeting, packaging and sourcing of local food ingredients
  • Best business practices and experiences
