Venice Theatre celebrates graduates and volunteers

Venice, FL -- Venice Theatre held its annual volunteer party on Sunday, May 1 and in honor of the theatre’s 60th anniversary, the theme was “OUR DIAMOND JUBILEE”.

Volunteer Coordinator Kim Kollar invited guests wear a little “bling” with their casual t-shirts, jeans and shorts.  Outfits were embellished with lots of glitter and rhinestones; countless women sported tiaras and plenty of men wore bow-ties and cummerbunds with their volunteer t-shirts.

Approximately 400 volunteers attended the party which kicked off with an awards ceremony and entertainment in the theatre’s MainStage.

Student Gabriella Gorka graduated from the theatre’s Technical Theatre Apprenticeship Program, 20 new members were inducted into the Hall of Fame and long-time volunteer Geri Becker was presented with a 50-year pendant.

Sarasota, Florida -- Asolo Repertory Theatre is seeking actors, both Equity and non-Equity, for its 2011-2012 season production of MY FAIR LADY.

Actors selected for this production will have the rare experience of working under the direction of Tony Award-winning and Oscar Award-nominated theatre icon Frank Galati.

With music by Frederick Loewe, book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, MY FAIR LADY is a classic story of determination and achievement that features some of the most memorable songs and characters in musical theatre history.

Retro red tide film wins "Best in Show" at Mote

Sarasota, FL -- Learning about Florida red tide just got a little cooler, thanks to a video straight out of 1950s health class.

The retro-style film “Red Tide and You” recently won Best in Show at the Art of Red Tide Science exhibit at Mote Marine Laboratory.

The exhibit, which wrapped up on April 26, featured 14 art and outreach projects created by students from Ringling College of Art and Design as part of the Ecology of Water course taught by Mote scientists. 

The students created videos, clothing, a puppet show, a video game and other outreach projects to communicate red tide research information to the general public.

Venice Theatre summer camp goes to Hollywood!

Venice, Florida -- Registration is now open for Venice Theatre’s annual summer theatre camps and adult classes. 

Campers will rotate daily between acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre activities.

Instructors include area theatre professionals Cathy Baudrit, Kelly Duyn, Alyssa Marie Hunek, Cathleen McClendon, Ronald Myroup, Sandy Davisson and Gladys Varga. The theme for the summer is “Hooray for Hollywood.”  

VT’s own playwright in residence, Ronald Myroup, will create an original script that will be performed on the theatre’s MainStage July 15 & 16, 2011. Tuition scholarships are available for qualified families.

Publix grants $25,000 to local theatre's 'Access to the Arts' program

Sarasota, Florida – Asolo Repertory Theatre has received a generous $25,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities to support the theatre’s Education and Outreach initiative, Access to the Arts. This program is a cornerstone of Asolo Rep’s mission to educate the community’s children through participation in superior educational programs. The support of Publix Super Markets Charities will ensure that thousands of children will be able to participate in and take full advantage of their experience attending high quality professional theatrical productions.

Representatives from Publix Super Markets Charities present the grant award check to Asolo Rep on April 29, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. during a small private ceremony held in the Asolo Rep offices at the performing arts center (5555 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, Florida).

Publix has been an active supporter of the Access to the Arts program for nearly 20 years.

Artwork sought for exhibit at Jacaranda Public Library

Venice, Florida -- Jacaranda Public Library in Venice and the Venice Art Center are seeking hanging artwork from local artists to be shown at the library in conjunction with an exhibit presented May 11 through June 24 to honor the life and legacy of Emma Lazarus.

Artwork from local artists will be on display and available for purchase from May 20 through June 27 at the library, 4143 Woodmere Park Blvd., Venice. 

“We are inviting local artists to submit works that will complement the Emma Lazarus exhibit and expresses our shared immigration experience, national character, civic virtues or social conscience,” said Greg Carlson, manager of Jacaranda Public Library.

This weekend brings a Fiesta of art

Sarasota, Florida - Artists will line Ocean Boulevard this weekend (April 30-May 1) for Siesta Fiesta.

The outdoor art show at Siesta Key Village attracts a wide-range of artists. Works vary from $25 earrings to $30,000 sculptures. "This is a fantastic way to explore the work of many different artists in one setting," says festival promoter Howard Alan in a release.

Ocean Boulevard will be closed to cars starting at Ocean and Canal and running through Beach Road.
