Venice, Florida -- Venice Theatre is pleased to welcome Theatre Winter Haven’s 60-minute production of William Gibson’s acclaimed drama, Golda’s Balcony.

This one-woman show recently won top honors - including best actress and best director - at the Florida State Theatre Festival and the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

The script of Golda’s Balcony follows the life of Golda Meir from Russian immigrant to American school teacher to the epicenter of international politics as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. The play pits Meir against Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger with the possible launch of nuclear weapons against her enemies, unless the U.S. comes to her country’s aid. Golda's balcony overlooks Israel's underground nuclear arms facility.  From this bunker, Meir's thoughts range from deeply funny to deeply relevant in a spellbinding performance that Venice Theatre’s Executive/Artistic Director, Murray Chase, says is “one of the top acting performances he has seen at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in ten years. This production is a real contender for best production nationally. It’s that good.”

In preparation for the national competition in Carmel, Indiana in June, an encore performance will be presented on Venice Theatre’s MainStage Monday, June 10, 2013 at 7:30 p. m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.venicestage.com or by calling 941-488-1115.  Proceeds go toward Theatre Winter Haven’s travel to the national festival. A talk back with actress Katrina Ploof and director Norman Small will follow the performance.

Venice Theatre is located at 140 W. Tampa Ave. on the island in Venice. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one hour before all performances. Summer hours (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) begin June 1.
