Portion of World Trade Center South Tower coming to Sarasota

Portion of World Trade Center South Tower coming to Sarasota

Sarasota, FL - Sarasota's newest police headquarters will soon be home to a powerful relic from the World Trade Center's South Tower - a steel beam that once supported the 90th, 91st, and 92nd floors of the building. This monument to the lives lost during the historic attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 stands 36 feet tall and weighs over 10 tons.

The slab of the building's infrastructure will travel from New York City and be placed facing Payne Park from the police station's southeast corner, where officers are delighted to host such a significant memorial with real meaning.

The massive monument will be a small piece of history Sarasota can call its own. It is set to be transported and unveiled sometime before the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 next year.

Venice, Florida - All the customers say the same thing: once you try the food here, you will keep coming back again and again.

The Bada Bing Italian restaurant is truly a hidden gem in Venice. Family owned and operated, this place has the entire Cararo family taking care of you and everything served comes with a little Brooklyn attitude on the side.

Ben Cararo owned a few Bada Bings in New York, but decided to retire to Florida a few years back. Little did he know that his sons and daughters would want to recreate the Bada Bing in Florida. All the recipes have been handed down throughout the years and are prepared with love and attention to detail.

After 9 nine years, 1-legged woman to finish walk across country

After 9 nine years, 1-legged woman to finish walk across country

Sarasota, Florida -- Carol Cruise has been called the "female Forrest Gump," as she's walked across the country for the last nine years.

What makes her journey even more impressive, though, is she's done it with only one leg.

"Every year I just walked until I couldn't walk anymore because of the weather, then I I took off for the winter," Cruise said Wednesday as she passed through Sarasota County, "the last three years, I've walked year-round.  This year I've gone from California to here."

After a surgery gone wrong forced her right leg to be amputated, the Ohio pastor took off to spread a message of faith and fighting on.

"To encourage differently-abled people to look at their abilities and not focus so much on disabilities," Cruise explained.

Since January of 2002, she's gone from Miami to Maine, to Seattle to San Diego, walking along the entire perimeter of the United States.

She's gone more than 10,000 miles.

Districts failing to meet class size limits face steep fines

Bradenton, Florida -- School districts had eight years to meet the class size limits set by the state.

According to the state, 35 of the 67 school districts did not adhere to the size limitations per class, and now face steep fines. In the Bay area, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Citrus and Hernando counties are in compliance. Manatee and Sarasota school districts, however, are not.

Sarasota faces more than $500,000 in fines. The state reports 625 classes were over the limit, representing 4.92% of the district's classrooms.
